Jakarta, Indonesia CNN – A Saudi Arabian author blogs, Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for insulting Islam, get the highest human rights award from the European Union, Sakharov, on Thursday (29/10) ,
In the announcement of the conferment, Head of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, said that the pro-democracy blogger is facing brutal torture. He urged King Salman to immediately release Badawi.
“This man was sentenced to the most evil which can only be described as brutal torture. I urge the Saudi king to release him immediately,” he said.
“The relationship (between the EU and Saudi Arabia) is very dependent on how human rights valued by our colleagues. They (victims of human rights cases in Arabia) not only unappreciated, but also trampled,” said Schulz.
Badawi case directly into the international spotlight after a Saudi court decided to execute the punishment. However, the process was stopped after 50 times whip.
Saudi officials ultimately delay the legal process. But Badawi’s wife, Ensaf Haidar, who had emigrated to Canada with their baby says that caning would soon be resumed.
“Saudi authorities have been given the green light to continue flogging of Badawi,” Haidar said earlier this week.
Badawi, who is struggling to express his views, considered to deserve appreciation class prestigious Sakharov human rights. In the list of award nominations this year, there is the name of the Russian opposition leader shot dead, Boris Nemtsov, and the Venezuelan opposition groups.
This award is given annually to honor those who dare to fight against intolerance, fanaticism, and pressure. Last year, the European Parliament gave this award to Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege, for his efforts to help victims of rape by groups of soldiers.
Previously, this award also had fallen into the hands of Pakistan Malala Yousafzai education observers, human rights leader Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Myanmar activist Aung San Suu Kyi. (lal)
